Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy allows your doctor to examine the lining of your colon (large intestine) for any abnormalities. Your doctor will insert a colonoscope (a flexible tube with a tiny video camera at the tip) into the rectum and advance slowly to examine the lining. For the procedure, you will lie on your left side in most cases, and sometimes on your back. The procedure itself typically takes 20-30 minutes.

Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

A flexible sigmoidoscopy allows your doctor to examine the lining of the rectum and the sigmoid colon. Your doctor will insert a colonoscope (a flexible tube with a tiny video camera at the tip) into the rectum and advance slowly to examine the lining. For the procedure, you will lie on your left side in most cases.

Upper Endoscopy

An upper endoscopy allows your doctor to examine the lining of the esophagus, stomach and upper duodenum with an endoscope (a flexible tube with a tiny video camera at the tip) which is inserted through the mouth. For the procedure, you will lie on your left side in most cases, and sometimes on your back. The procedure itself typically takes 20-30 minutes.

Video Capsule Endoscopy

A video capsule endoscopy allows for the examination of the small intestine (duodenum, jejunum and ileum). A vitamin-pill size video capsule is swallowed by the patient. This capsule has its own camera and light source. The capsule travels through the digestive tract while taking thousands of pictures, which are transmitted to a recorder that the patient wears on a belt around the waist. The patient may resume his/her usual daily activities. This procedure is complete after 8 hours at which time the recorder will need to be returned to the hospital.
